Physiotherapy’ is a branch of modern medical science that includes examination, assessment, interpretation, physical diagnosis, planning and execution of treatment and advice to any person for the purpose of preventing, correcting, alleviating, and limiting dysfunction, acute and chronic bodily malfunction including life-saving measures via chest physiotherapy in the intensive care unit, curing physical disorders or disability, promoting physical fitness, facilitating healing and pain relief and treatment of physical and psychological disorders through modulating psychological and physical response using physical agents, activities, and devices including exercise, mobilisation, manipulations, therapeutic ultrasound, electrical and thermal agents and electrotherapy for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
`Physiotherapist’ is a qualified professional who has acquired all the above-mentioned knowledge and skills for entry into practice after being awarded a Bachelor’s degree in the subject of “Physiotherapy” from a recognized institute affiliated with the University conducting a full-time course not less than four years and six months of internship. Through the program, the student will acquire theoretical and practical skills to effectively meet patient and community needs. He or she will acquire knowledge, skills, and attitude in basic sciences, medical, behavioural, and social sciences, and physiotherapy core subjects and would be able to integrate them horizontally and vertically throughout the curriculum.
Scope of Practice:
The role of physiotherapists in the delivery of health services is rapidly changing and dynamic in nature. Physiotherapy is an autonomous profession; the physiotherapist is a direct care provider, a researcher, an educator, a leader, and an advocate for the profession. The current scope of practice involves but is not limited to acute care, intensive care, diagnosing dysfunction, and building capacity and performance to improve functioning in musculoskeletal, Cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, developmental, and paediatric dysfunctions; gynaecology and women’s health, geriatric, wellness, and industrial health and sports across the lifespan. The scope of practice also involves super specialty areas, hand, and various medical and surgical conditions across the spectrum. With increasing technological advances the physiotherapist with sound knowledge of movement science can advance the scope of practice
Program Outcomes
On completing the BPTh program, graduates are equipped to independently evaluate, plan, and execute physiotherapy treatment across three core skill domains.

- ICF framework application; physiotherapeutic evaluation, electrodiagnosis, and manual therapy skills on models.
- Integrated kinesiotherapy and electrotherapy for acute, sub-acute, and chronic dysfunctions.
Full Clinical Integration
- Integrates all prior sciences to independently manage musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiorespiratory conditions in hospital and community settings.
- Health promotion, disease prevention, community physiotherapy, and occupational health.
- Bioengineering: aids and appliances for ambulation, protection, and injury prevention.
6 Months of Clinical Practice
- 26-week rotatory posting (6 weeks each) across Musculoskeletal, Neurosciences, Cardiovascular & Respiratory (including ICU), and Community settings.
- Optional 2-week elective posting; individual or group short project (case series, narrative review, or retrospective analysis).
- Degree awarded only on certified logbook completion. Students must pass all final year subjects to be eligible.

Candidates must have passed the 12th grade with science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) and appeared for the NEET-UG in the respective year.

- 85% Seats: Admissions are conducted through the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) based on the state merit list.

- Master of Physiotherapy (MPT)
Overview
The MPT is a two-year full-time programme combining classroom teaching, self-directed academic activities, and structured clinical postings. The first year covers advanced physiotherapy theory alongside research methodology, biostatistics, and teaching technology through workshops and modules — with compulsory certifications in ethics, research, and teaching technology due within the first six months.
Students rotate across allied and speciality clinical postings, select a dissertation topic within the first four months, and submit the completed dissertation prior to university examinations. Learning is reinforced through seminars, journal reviews, and case presentations. Select postings may be offered at reputed centres across the country for a broader clinical experience. University theory and practical examinations are held at the end of the second year.

Perform a physical therapy diagnosis using the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) framework — identifying impairments of body structure and function, environmental and personal factors, and addressing activity limitations and participation restrictions.
Evidence-Based Clinical Practice
Execute all routine physiotherapeutic procedures with sound clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
Function as a prominent and effective member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, managing all conditions requiring physiotherapeutic intervention.

Practice with advanced knowledge and skills within the chosen physiotherapy speciality area.
Academic Teaching
Undertake physiotherapy teaching assignments under supervision for undergraduate teaching programmes.
Research & Dissertation
Prepare a project proposal with a well-selected research design and interpret evaluated outcome measures using appropriate data processing techniques and statistical methods.
Admission & Eligibility:
Candidate must have passed B.P.Th degree with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks from an institute situated in the state of Maharashtra, recognized as per the Maharashtra State Council for Occupational Therapy & Physiotherapy Act 2002.
Admissions are centrally carried out through a Common Entrance Test PGP-CET. Admission to the course is based on merit, according to the results of the PGP-CET examination conducted by the State Government.
